An ulcer is a condition in which skin tissue breaks down on a certain area of the foot. They can be quick to occur but difficult to heal. An X-ray could be needed to see if the bone underneath is involved.

Causes of Ulcers
• Diabetes mellitus that is not controlled
• Vascular insufficiency
• A lack of sensation
• Trauma to the area
• Severe irritation from improperly fitted footwear

What can a patient do?
• Immediately see a podiatrist
• Inform the doctor’s office that you suffer from diabetes and have a foot sore
• Do not attempt self-treatment

• Examine the affected area
• Perform any necessary tests such as X-ray or MRI to rule out bone involvement
• Care for the wound, perform debridement and prescribe antibiotics
• Alert a team of doctors, including the family practice doctor, internist, endocrinologist, vascular surgeon, and infectious disease specialist to fully deal with the ulcer
