Achilles Tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendon attached to the back of the heel bone, often caused by over-training or an insufficient warm-up for athletic activities. Sometimes it can also be caused by a large bony prominence present on the back of a heel bone. Ice, aspirin, rest, and anti-inflammatory medications are common solutions. However, if the pain and swelling are chronic, a podiatrist may be needed.

Causes of Achilles Tendonitis

• Being overweight
• An imbalance in the muscles
• Deformity in the bone
• A tightness in muscles of the back of the leg
• Over-stretching the band of tissue from the ball of the foot to the heel
• Trauma
• Warming up or training improperly

What can a patient do?
• Purchase comfortable and supportive shoes
• Be sure to stretch sufficiently before exercise
• Employ the RICE technique- rest, ice, compression, elevation

What can a podiatrist do for you?
• Examine the affected area
• Perform the appropriate scan, such as a CT, MRI, X-ray, or bone scan
• Suggest taping, an over-the-counter arch support or heel lift
• Prescribe a custom orthosis or medication
• Demonstrate proper exercises to alleviate pain
• Provide injections or surgery if necessary
